According to Economic Daily News, the Taiwanese camera module manufacturer, Primax electronics will be developing at least some of the dual-camera modules in the yet unreleased iPhone 7.

Why dual-cameras ?

Dual-camera modules seem to be all the rage these days, with Xiaomi the latest to bite onto the trend, but why is this and what are the advantages to doing so ?

Interestingly there are several ways a dual-camera setup can be utilized, with each smartphone manufacturer trying to use it in a different way to try and get the edge of the competition and improve the quality of photos taken on your phone.

For example, the HTC One M8 uses their dual-camera setup to offer a shallow depth of field giving a SLR type of control to you picture taking. The Huawei P9 uses dual-camera to reduce noise and improve image detail.  The LG G5 promises optical zoom quality.  It’s not yet known how Apple will implement the dual-camera setup in the iPhone 7.

Sensors

It’s not yet revealed which sensor Primax Electronics will be utilizing in the iPhone 7., although you have to remember that the sensor is just a small part of the camera, and although important, other factors have to be taken into account such as the lens, module electronics, and jpg engine algorithms used to process the data from the module.

Will all iPhone 7’s be dual-camera ?

From the rumours that we have heard, it looks like the standard iPhone 7, the smaller 4.7″ variant will only carry a single rear camera.

How many Megapixels ?

So far it hasn’t been announced how many megapixels the iPhone 7 main camera will carry, but according to sources, about 70% of Primax modules come with a 13 megapixel sensor resolution, which would be an improvement over existing models and could indicate where the iPhone 7 is headed in terms of megapixels.
